RAD ION
Our friends in Germany have been busy! I recently had the pleasure of sitting in on a RAD ION planning meeting, albeit remotely. Big ideas and cool uses for ION are being discussed. Simply RAD ION is a combination of Rapid Application Development and Interface Object Notation. The team envisions a multi-layered approach to what I call rapid prototyping. Using this system you’ll be able to use an editor to produce ION which is then parsed and translated into a html/js prototype (possibly based on a framework like YUI).
ION moves forward
Darren Cooper, the ION man in Germany, presented the ION concept last night. He is looking for resources to create an ION parser that would enable rapid prototyping. Check out these pictures on flickr.
There is some interest and we'll see what happens over the next few weeks. More to come...
ION is big in Germany
We recently got a few emails from some people in Germany who are totally jazzed about ION. We're excited about this interest in ION and how the word is spreading. There is talk about creating an ION parser to create rapid prototypes, which is one direction we saw it going. In response to this interest we're going to host an ION wiki so there's a central place in continue the discussion. I am going to work on creating the kayak.com example for ION and how it integrates into the LDD. I should have this ready before May 10th.
ION Recap
Chris and I introduced ION (Interface Object Notation) at the IA Summit 07 (our presentation) over the weekend. We were happy to receive many positive comments and helpful suggestions. Most of these reflected some of my concerns and overall hesitance in presenting ION at such an early stage. But let me take a step back and explicitly state what we think ION’s purpose is:
- ION is a notation system used to describe RIAs and complex interface behavior, though it is also applicable to standard interface behavior as well.
- ION strives to be a standardized notation used to describe wireframes and interface objects, in order to promote clarity and consistency.
- ION is meant to facilitate communicate between an Interaction Desiger/Information Architect and a developer or other designers within a team through the use of a common language. ION is especially applicable for dispersed development over multiple location and/or continents. ION potentially can be used to communicate interface behavior to non-technical project stakeholders and clients.

Thanks to everyone who came to our presentation at the IA Summit. We had a lot of interesting conversations with people over the rest of weekend and we'll be incorporating the feedback we received into the next iteration of ION.
