Happy iPhone Day!
If you haven't realized, today is the day. Apple is releasing their vaunted iPhone today. So happy iPhone Day! Neither of us is planning on rushing out and buying an iPhone for a myriad of reasons, but that doesn't mean we're not totaly enamored with it. The interactivity on the iPhone looks marvelous. I instigated a thread on the IxDA list, "iPhone, Who's Buying", that spurred some responses that are worthwhile to read. And to be honest, I'm jealous of anyone picking up an iPhone today. It's a nice piece of swag!
Apple in ABQ!
The long anticipated Apple store is opening today at ABQ Uptown. We're planning to drop in and join the fray this afternoon (sporting our new Clearwired T-shirts, or course).
Mac Moment
I have been using this great little OS X app for the last few weeks called Overflow from Stunt Software. It’s a utility that lives in the dock and allows you to organize applications and folders into categories.
Sundial 1.1
Sundial 1.1 is now available for download. This version adds support for several new languages, fixes a couple of minor bugs, and adds a few tweaks to the user interface. Enjoy!
Widget Localization
Sundial taught me how to localize Dashboard widgets. It’s pretty painless, really. If you’re not doing it already, hopefully this article will inspire you.
skEdit, The (Mostly) Perfect Text Editor
I’m crazy about skEdit. I use it every day in my work here at Clearwired. It replaced for me BBEdit, which I had been a paid user of for several versions. (I still keep BBEdit 8.0 around, but I only use it for finding diffs between documents.) I like skEdit so much that I gave it an unsolicited plug in a recent podcast segment.
What Sundial Taught Me
In case you missed our announcement, we recently released a Mac OS X Dashboard widget that allows you to track time in Basecamp. It’s called Sundial, and, despite having built several widgets before, I learned a ton from working on it.
Announcing Sundial
Sundial is a widget for Mac OS X that makes Basecamp time tracking as simple as click, click, type, type, click. Click: Select a project. Click: Select a to-do item (optional). Type: Enter a description. Type: Enter the number of hours. Click: Save your time to Basecamp.
On "Worse is Better"
Back in the day, there was a concept popular among Unix-types, called Worse is Better. The idea, basically, is that you start with solutions that are close to perfect, but fairly simple. Then you layer on additional technology to take care of the remaining portions. Plan on reuse rather than everyone going through your gateway. This is in direct opposition to systems that try to be all things to all people all the time.
