UX Matters Article

An article I wrote on, "What Puts the Design in Interaction Design", was published in the July 2007 issue of UX Matters. Take a look.

Happy iPhone Day!

If you haven't realized, today is the day. Apple is releasing their vaunted iPhone today. So happy iPhone Day! Neither of us is planning on rushing out and buying an iPhone for a myriad of reasons, but that doesn't mean we're not totaly enamored with it. The interactivity on the iPhone looks marvelous. I instigated a thread on the IxDA list, "iPhone, Who's Buying", that spurred some responses that are worthwhile to read. And to be honest, I'm jealous of anyone picking up an iPhone today. It's a nice piece of swag!

RAD ION

Our friends in Germany have been busy! I recently had the pleasure of sitting in on a RAD ION planning meeting, albeit remotely. Big ideas and cool uses for ION are being discussed. Simply RAD ION is a combination of Rapid Application Development and Interface Object Notation. The team envisions a multi-layered approach to what I call rapid prototyping. Using this system you’ll be able to use an editor to produce ION which is then parsed and translated into a html/js prototype (possibly based on a framework like YUI).

Me and My Shuffle

On a run this weekend I was thinking how much use I have been getting out of my iPod shuffle and how much more I use it than my iPod. I love the simplicity of flashing the Shuffle with an entire new playlist - the device has one use, play music, randomly if desired. It's lightweight, inconspicuous and durable. I think that's why I'm so fond of it. The last time I really enjoyed using the iPod was on a solo road trip to Phoenix recently when I listened to Freakonomics in it's entirety (car audio kit required). I typically take the iPod when I'm flying out of town for business to listen to Podcasts or music. The few times that I have watched a video Podcast on it, my eyes go blurry and I can only last a few minutes. The Shuffle seems to be a perfect complement to the service (iTunes).

Flux Capacitor

I caught Marc Orchant's presentation at the nmitsa monthly meeting today. He and Oliver Starr gave a great presentation on blogging as a business tool for outbound communications.

ION moves forward

Darren Cooper, the ION man in Germany, presented the ION concept last night. He is looking for resources to create an ION parser that would enable rapid prototyping. Check out these pictures on flickr.

There is some interest and we'll see what happens over the next few weeks. More to come...

ION is big in Germany

We recently got a few emails from some people in Germany who are totally jazzed about ION. We're excited about this interest in ION and how the word is spreading. There is talk about creating an ION parser to create rapid prototypes, which is one direction we saw it going. In response to this interest we're going to host an ION wiki so there's a central place in continue the discussion. I am going to work on creating the kayak.com example for ION and how it integrates into the LDD. I should have this ready before May 10th.

ION Recap

Chris and I introduced ION (Interface Object Notation) at the IA Summit 07 (our presentation) over the weekend. We were happy to receive many positive comments and helpful suggestions. Most of these reflected some of my concerns and overall hesitance in presenting ION at such an early stage. But let me take a step back and explicitly state what we think ION’s purpose is:

  1. ION is a notation system used to describe RIAs and complex interface behavior, though it is also applicable to standard interface behavior as well.
  2. ION strives to be a standardized notation used to describe wireframes and interface objects, in order to promote clarity and consistency.
  3. ION is meant to facilitate communicate between an Interaction Desiger/Information Architect and a developer or other designers within a team through the use of a common language. ION is especially applicable for dispersed development over multiple location and/or continents. ION potentially can be used to communicate interface behavior to non-technical project stakeholders and clients.

LDD and ION Slides

Thanks to everyone who came to our presentation at the IA Summit. We had a lot of interesting conversations with people over the rest of weekend and we'll be incorporating the feedback we received into the next iteration of ION. Here are the slides for our presentation at the IA Summit: iasummit.zip (5mb).

If you're interested in ION, please let us know by commenting below. We're going to create a wiki for ION development. Also, until we get the wiki up, I'll post my future iterations on this blog.
