Olympic Medal Map
There's just something so very simple and yet compelling about the New York Times' interactive map of Olympic medals.
We've seen info-graphics like this before, color filled circles sized to depict a value proportionally. In this case the number of summer Olympic medals won by a country. The circles can be viewed either by geographic location or by ranking. The geographic view tells more of a story than ranking. As you traverse through time from the 1896 Olympics through this years games, a story unfolds. You witness the geo-political history of the last century as you move the slider from year to year. Also notice how the field of medal winners change since 1976, the medal winners have become increasingly dispersed amongst a variety of countries. It's amazing what you can extrapolate from a simple visualization.
