The Importance of Localization

I talked in a recent blog post about how to localize a widget. Sundial is a good example of why this is so important. So far, our little widget has been downloaded by users in the following 46 countries: Argentina*, Australia*, Austria*, Brazil*, Bulgaria, Canada*, China, Costa Rica*, Denmark*, Finland, France*, Germany*, Greece, Hong Kong, Hungary, India, Indonesia, Iran, Israel, Italy*, Japan, Korea, Lithuania, Malaysia, Mali, Netherlands, New Zealand*, Pakistan, Peru*, Philippines, Poland, Portugal, Qatar, Russia*, Singapore, South Africa, Spain*, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, Thailand, Turkey, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom*, United States*, Venezuela*

* This country’s language is supported in Sundial 1.1

If you are fluent in the language for any of the countries listed above that are not currently supported and you’re willing to spend an hour doing translation to English in exchange for a t-shirt and a little fame … write us!

Update: In the five days since we released Sundial 1.1, folks in the following 10 additional countries have downloaded our little widget: Bosnia and Herzegovina, Iceland, Kenya, Kuwait, Mexico, Saudi Arabia, Slovakia, Uruguay, and Vietnam. Cool! Now we just need some of them to become translators... hint, hint...
Sundial is lovely, thank you very much.
However it doesn’t seem to remember my password after rebooting. Is this a feature or a b*g?
Feature.
I’d really like to use Sundial but whenever I click refresh the widget displays “Error: Unknown error”. Is there something I can do to track this down?
same problem as him “Error:Unknown error”
I am entering my correct info for basecamp but Sundial is displaying "Error: Uknown Error. Is there something I can do to get this to work?
Hey, I kept getting frustrated by the Error: Unknown error message until I realized I was using http instead of https for the site address. The reason it took me so long though was in my initial sanity tests Sundial caught malformed addresses and alerted me. Maybe you should add the necessary logic to that error check?
I’m getting the same Unknown Error message - and it’s intermittent. Sometimes the time is posted successfully, sometimes not. At this point, usually not. Pretty frustrating. When it works, it’s a great widget, though. (My URL is correct, by the way). Also want to second the idea about having an option to remember the password. is this widget still being developed, or was October 2006 the last shot?
If Sundial had a timer-based way to track time, it would be THE perfect Basecamp widget!

Thanks for all your efforts :)
After working brilliantly for several months, I am now getting the “error: unknown error” message. I have just upgraded to 10.5 Leopard, is anyone else having probs under Leopard?
I love the idea of Sundial. But in practice, after a few posts (say 6-10), it stops working and generates error messages. After that I have to stop using it for a while (a day or two). Then it’ll be okay for a bit, as above.

It also does not remember my Basecamp password from session to session. I’d like that to be an option.

Are you planning to update this anytime soon?
I’m getting the “unknown error” error every time I try and make an entry after installing Leopard. It was something that happened previously but I could usually clear it out, now with the Leopard install it’s flat out broken.

The widget’s done a lot for me and does still list the projects, todos and hour log now, but seems to be forever broken in Leopard unless there is a plan to develop/bug fix beyond 1.1

Please?
I was having trouble with this cool widget in OS X Leopard. I’ve posted a patched version at href="http://wearetrue.com/blog/?p=191.
Wow, thanks to the commenter who mentioned https. I could login and get project lists with just http, but always got Unknown Error when I used Sundial to log time to BaseCamp.

This fixed me! Wish I had known 4 months ago. Now, I can finally circulate the widget with confidence.
I cant get a single time post to go through. It logged in just fine and will show all my projects but when i try to post a time entry it gives me teh “unknown error” just like some of the above posts.

Any ideas?

Thanks!
Me too, won’t connect at all. Error: Unknown Error. Looks great too...
Also seeing it. Does anyone have a solution? Or at least ways to work around the problem. At this point, I can’t even get the project list.
Same “unknown error” as listed above. Everything checks out. Looks like it could be a cool widget.... anyone find a fix?
The Unknown Error message is caused by a bad header sent in the HTTP request. It can be fixed by opening the widget’s contents and looking in the “LocalResources/Sundial.js” file. then remove the line (near line 900)

’Host’: (getObj(’b’)).value,

save the file. reload the widget and it should work.

The reason it fails is that it sets “Host: https://base.camp.address.org” where it shouldn’t contain the protocol... “Host: base.camp.address.org” However, the XMLHttpRequest Object sets the proper Host header if no Host is set. Hence, removing it fixes the problem.
Figured out a cause for the “unknown error” - Basecamp project MUST have at least one “to do” listed but do NOT select it in Sundail. (doesn’t make sense but it seems to work)

Hope this helps…
I am also getting the Unknown Error message. My URL is correct and I’ve never been able to get it to work. I am able to get the Telescope widget to work using the same credentials. Any ideas?
